The 38th Annual Forest of Needwood 5 mi. race will once again take place in Petersville, Maryland on Saturday March 14, 2020.
Since its beginnings in the early 80s the race has been put on to provide a major source of funding for a scholarship fund to help with the college cost of 4 graduating Brunswick High seniors, who have taken part in the sports of track and or cross country. Over the years, the Express Run Club has given out over $15,000 in support of these excellent Brunswick student athletes.
In 1999 the race took on another important meaning. That was the year that Jennifer Shafer Odom gave her life in the service of our country while on a mission in South America. Jennifer was a Brunswick High graduate, active in several sports and drama while attending BHS and a graduate of West Point. Each year since her loss, the club has dedicated this race in her name.
The race begins and ends at the historic St. Mary Catholic Church just off Rt. 180 on Catholic Church Road. It is a 5 mile loop race through rolling farm land once known as The Forest of Needood owned by the 2nd Governor of Maryland, Thomas Slim Lee. The gun will go off at 1 pm with registration open at 11:30 am at the church.
Overall champion plaques, age group awards, fun random prizes and refreshments are offered to all. Plenty of parking is available at the church and the course is well marked and patrolled. A very attractive Needwood shirt is given to all participants. Early registration by March 5th is just $25 for adults and $10 for middle school and high school ages.

For a day of great exercise, fun competition and a way to help some students and honor Jennifer, BARC and the Express Run Club of Brunswick hope to see you on March 14th. This is one of the oldest road races in the state of Maryland and Frederick County. It makes a great family outing, offers excellent competition and is the perfect kick off to spring road racing that will be offered in the near future or for excellent training for high school and middle school runners.
